About

Gavin You

Hi, I'm Gavin. Really glad you're here!

I study software engineering at the University of Waterloo, and the thing I get most excited about is artificial intelligence. When I'm not coding, I'm usually writing a script, playing piano, watching a movie or out on a trail.

Every page on this site starts in a place that means something to me. This one starts in the Alps, so make yourself at home and have a look around.

The program

Software Engineering@ University of Waterloo

Waterloo's Software Engineering program is run jointly by the Faculties of Engineering and Mathematics. It pairs a full engineering foundation with computer science depth, and alternates study terms with co-op work terms in industry.

I intend to specialize in artificial intelligence, starting from deep learning. I'm especially drawn to generative AI and what it can do in creative fields like film and music.

Competitive swimming

Fifteen years of my life in the pool, racing up to the national level. Years of early mornings and long sets taught me most of what I know about discipline.

I recently hiked the Tour du Mont Blanc, a loop of about 170 km around the whole massif. It took 11 days and crossed three countries: France, Italy and Switzerland. By the end we had climbed and descended about 11,000 hard metres.

To get ready, my family spent a month training on a large hill, going up and down it over and over.

We stayed in hostels at night, and that's where I met so many people. A lot of evenings ended with everyone sharing homemade meals. During the day the trail ran through small, adorable towns where the people were incredibly welcoming.

Above all, it was beautiful, every single day. I honestly don't think any photo does it justice.
